AS ONE of the country's leading suppliers of dairy hygiene products, Ecosyl needs to deliver its goods safely and legally to farms across the UK.
Two of the products marketed under its Rosebeck Services trading arm - Parlour Gold Foam, which is used to clean down dairy parlours and Digit Gold, which is used to help prevent hoof infections – are classified as hazardous for carriage under the EU and UK regulations and must only be transported by a licensed transport provider. Without this service Ecosyl would not be able to market the products to farmers.
David Pickard, regulatory affairs manager for Stokesley-based Ecosyl, said: "The problem that we have is that these products, which are sold in 20 litre drums, must be handled by a specialist licensed haulier. Often, farmers don't want to buy big quantities, they just want a couple of drums at a time so the fact that Nicholson's can handle relatively small quantities cost-effectively means we don't have to wait until we have a bulk order; we can just use them as and when we need a delivery".
"It's very easy to get caught out with the regulations. For example, if you are carrying these kind of products without the correct paperwork, training and equipment, then you could lose your driving licence at the very least and the company would be fined. And if you have an accident, then the consequences could be terrible, especially if the product damages the environment or is corrosive."
"Because it's such a specialised area and the regulations are so complex, you need expert knowledge to comply so we rely on Nicholson's to help us meet our legal responsibilities."
"We are very confident that they do their utmost to ensure that our goods are being transported within the law."
